News Britney's new single a fledgling hit at radio
09/18/2007 1:08 PM, Reuters

Not all the news is bad for Britney Spears who seemingly can't do anything right these days. Her new single "Gimme More" is turning into a hit at top 40 radio. The tune, which she lip-synched during her widely ridiculed performance at the recent MTV Video Music Awards, jumped five places to No. 20 on trade publication Radio & Records' chart. It marks her first top 20 appearance since "Every Time" in summer 2004.On Billboard's Pop 100 Airplay chart, "Gimme More" jumped nine places to No. 16. The cut is expected to be released digitally in the next few weeks; Spears' new, as-yet-untitled album is due November 13. It will be her first studio release since 2004's "In the Zone."Radio & Records and Billboard are owned by the Nielsen Co.

Britney Spears Finds A New Pal In Avril Lavigne

Britney Spears has resolved her differences with pop rival Avril Lavigne - and recruited her as her new party pal. Their new friendship comes just four months after Lavigne, 22, criticized Spears for being too weak to handle the pressures of fame.Referring to the fallen pop superstar's brief stint in rehab, she said: "What's happened to Britney is all down to who she is as a person. If you want a piece of this business you have to be able to deal with it. You can't complain about the pressures, the paparazzi, the madness, because that's your job."Lavigne has also previously hit out at the 25-year-old mother-of-two for dressing "like a showgirl" and dancing "like a hoe". But the pop pair managed to put their problems behind them and hours after Spears was ordered to submit to random drug and alcohol tests as part of her ongoing child custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, the Toxic singer was out on the town in Hollywood.Spears joined pals at club Hyde late on Tuesday night, where she met Lavigne and the stars shared a ride to another hot spot, Winston's. Swarmed by paparazzi, Spears later pulled into the Beverly Hills Police Station, and asked officers for an escort home.

Daily Entertainment Break: Bodyguard goes public: Post-rehab Britney did drugs

By Jennifer MartinezSpecial to the Mercury NewsArticle Launched: 09/24/2007 11:44:16 AM PDT

We knew it: Britney Spears' former bodyguard announced this morning what we've all been suspecting for months: he's seen her use drugs. Tony Barretto told Matt Lauer on "The Today Show" that he witnessed Spears using drugs on two occasions, both times "in a nightclub in Los Angeles."Barretto, also known as "Fat Tony," was Spears' bodyguard for two months after she left rehab. He was later fired."The incident happened at her table. She had me hold up a curtain, to make her area private," Barretto said. The second drug use incident he said he witnessed was in a private restroom secured for Spears at a club."She was in there for some time alone," Barretto recalled. "And I thought it'd be appropriate to check on her. And I knocked and peaked in, and I observed this behavior."Barretto said he never witnessed Spears using drugs in front of her two boys, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1 (thank goodness!). He admitted to Lauer that he had seen Spears drink alcohol when her sons were around, however."That would be up to the courts to decide whether that was abuse or just a drink," Barretto said. Check out the full "Today Show" interview at TMZ (www.tmz.com), or a truncated version at People Magazine (www.people.com). VH1's "Best Week Ever," deemed last week as Spears' worst week ever. Is it possible to sink any lower? It's only Monday, but it doesn't look like things are looking up for poor Brit this week.

Sarah Silverman Discusses The Controversy Over Her Britney Spears Jokes At VMAs

NEW YORK (AP) - Sarah Silverman still is responding to the negative reaction to her Britney Spears jokes at the MTV Video Music Awards.''The joke that everyone was upset about - me calling the kids 'adorable mistakes' - was the most innocuous joke,'' the 36-year-old comedian tells Us Weekly magazine in the issue that comes out Friday. ''It never occurred to me that would be deemed hurtful or over the line.''Says Silverman: ''I don't want to get into feuds with girls half my age. I'm in it to be funny and not for the drama. It's embarrassing.''Silverman, known for her deadpan delivery and winsome depravity, drew criticism earlier this month when she followed Spears' much-panned VMA performance with an off-color monologue taking aim at the troubled singer and her two sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline.''They are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see,'' Silverman said of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.Silverman also joked that Spears, at 25, had already accomplished in her life everything she ever will.Silverman, who dates late-night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel, has her own Comedy Central series, ''The Sarah Silverman Program.'' She also starred in a feature film-length version of her one-woman show, ''Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic.''
